Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a CNN medical commentator, attacked President Biden’s appointment of former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as Secretary of Health and Human Services, citing allegations that the White House believes he has the required experience. Reiner reacted to the report during a Sunday appearance on “CNN Newsroom,” saying that Becerra had been the wrong choice for the job since being appointed by Biden to lead the department during the coronavirus pandemic, and that the administration was experiencing coordination issues due to a lack of experience among the leadership.
Reiner told host Jim Acosta, “The problem is that Secretary Becerra was the wrong person for the post from the start.” Becerra fought back on criticism of his “hand-off” attitude to the pandemic, as well as blame for “not knowing what was going on” and not being an active part of the pandemic response, according to CNN correspondent Edward-Isaac Dovere.
Reiner suggested that they be managed by someone who understood how they all worked together, even if that person wasn’t a physician. Last week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki rejected allegations of tension between Becerra and the administration, saying that Vice President Joe Biden “remains confident” in his ability to carry out his duties.
